One is an instance, twice is a coincidence, and three times is a pattern. adidas has been using the Lightblaze POD, a new futuristic model based on the Lightblaze proper, as a means to jumpstart partnerships with new faces, permitting newcomers to communicate their design identity with minimal boundaries. Following debut collabs by Arte Antwerp and Entire Studios, Detroit-based artist Tyrrell Winston is the latest name to materialize his vision on adidas footwear.

The Lightblaze POD is more of a jumping-off point than anything. The main consistency between the model’s three releases thus far is the lower half, which stands out with sculpted Super Critical Foam (SCF) Lightstrike PODs. The uppers, meanwhile, have all looked pretty radically different.

Known for his three-dimensional pieces, including basketball art, Winston’s debut sneaker features a layered, slightly distressed upper done up in Wonder Alumina and White Overpaint, loosely mimicking the look of khakis with white paint splattered across them. White stripes appear on the sides, while Winston’s signature is stitched onto the heel.

“Taking on this project with adidas allowed me the creative freedom to put my own stamp on a signature sportswear canvas,” says Winston. “My work is always rooted in sport, giving new life to old objects, celebrating embedded history whilst building something new that can change over time. The final design is an amalgamation of influences from California, New York and Detroit – places I have lived in for long periods of my life that have shaped and evolved my aesthetic and artistic output. Above all, I wanted the shoe to be something that is easy to wear and gets better the more it is broken in.”
