SpaceX Emplyees Wore Custom Nike to the Company's IPO

SpaceX went public this morning, and while there is plenty of financial news to unpack there, another interesting story is emerging post-launch. Employees of the company were spotted wearing custom Nike shoes, complete with the SpaceX logo.

Love him or hate him, Elon Musk is now the world’s first trillionaire. The sudden bump in the Tesla and SpaceX frontman’s wealth came from the latter’s IPO this morning, bringing shares of the space exploration company to the public. However, this is a sneaker blog and I do not possess the knowledge of finance to talk about the ins and outs of the stock market. Luckily, there is a sneaker story here, one that raises an interesting question about custom footwear made by major brands.

During the event, some keen eyes spotted employees of SpaceX all rocking matching pairs of green shoes, with the logo added to the heel of the silhouette. The model in question is the Nike Tennis Classic, a simple silhouette that has been a staple of Nike’s everyday offerings for years, commonly found in mall stores and the Swoosh’s own outlet shops. The look covers the Tennis Classic in a dark green shade with white soles and heel counters, as well as the white SpaceX logo on the rear. Company merch is not a new phenomenon, for decades corporations have outfitted their employees in free swag that also shows their affiliation with an employer. Delta Airlines had a special pair of Air Force 1s made for employees last year, which were confirmed to be made by Nike.

The SpaceX Nike shoes feel a little different. We rarely see the Swoosh offer up custom shoes for other corporations, so this green style is presumably a custom look commissioned by SpaceX themselves. Who made them and how remains unknown for now, and Nike is not likely to share publicly if they were involved in this project. Elon Musk has a less-than-stellar reputation right now, stretching back far enough that Nike would have considered this if they were asked to make custom shoes for his company. They have cancelled partnerships with athletes and artists for less, so we’ll be watching to see if any more news about these custom shoes comes to light.
