Pair on light stones with purple cloth, grey suede, white N logo and purple accents, New Balance Numeric x Civil 480

New Balance Numeric has joined forces with Civil, the skate shop based in Rhode Island, for a sneaker built around an unlikely muse: the quahog. That’s the hard-shell clam pulled from Narragansett Bay and nicknamed “laborer’s caviar” by locals who’ve harvested it for generations. The Civil 480 turns that regional staple into a full design concept rather than a passing reference.

The pairing links two chapters of New England footwear history. New Balance built the original 480 in Maine starting in 1983, and New Balance Numeric reworked the silhouette for skateboarding in 2024, adding a widened double-layered toe cap, a reworked tread pattern and FuelCell cushioning for board feel. Civil owner Guido Silvestri said the goal was to root the shoe in home turf while keeping it relatable everywhere else: “I wanted the vibe of the shoe to be something that represented home to us, but also make it relatable to someone across the country, based on the culture of New England.”

The New Balance Numeric x Civil 480 Design

The upper leans on grooved, dark-gray suede meant to echo the ridges of a quahog shell, paired with a translucent outsole referencing the clam’s freshly shucked lip. Pearlescent purple detailing stands in for the shell’s interior, and a rope lace brings in a nautical touch. The wave-shaped “N” logo tips a cap to the Atlantic Ocean, and each pair ships with a navy “harvest bag” for storage.

Why Did New Balance Numeric And Civil Choose The Quahog?

Civil owner Guido Silvestri wanted the design to feel distinctly Rhode Island while still connecting with skateboarders outside New England, using the region’s signature clam harvest as the shoe’s visual language.
