The Air Jordan 4 “Tour Yellow” came to life at an interesting time for Jordan Brand, part of a now-beloved “Lifestyle Series” consisting of Air Jordan styles meant to be worn casually in the dawn of MJ’s playing career. It’s also famous for the “Rare Air” text hidden under its removable velcro tongue patch, a detail Jordan Brand likes to keep an “IYKYK” attitude about, though it essentially ties back to the early days of the Air Jordan line and the imperfections that came with the back-and-forth sample creation process. The original Undefeated Jordan 4, created a year earlier in 2005, had the same removable patch and “Rare Air” text underneath, but never saw an actual retail drop. The Jordan 4 “Laser” pack marked the first “Rare Air” release that same year, but skipped the removable velcro patch.
The return of the “Rare Air” 4s would have signaled major excitement in a vacuum, but Nike and Jordan Brand’s unabashed push toward re-releasing yesterday’s grails has left many feeling somewhat jaded, from the Undefeated 4s to the Wu-Tang Dunks and plenty more in recent years. That’s to say that while the “Tour Yellow” 4s have carried real weight for literal decades, we’re not entirely sold the sneaker will perform well at retail. Of course, that all depends on stock numbers and the like. Still, from a pure collector’s perspective, getting a historic Jordan without having to pull your hair out certainly isn’t something worth complaining about.
