New Balance leapt into the slim sneaker trend with the 204 model, combining their tech runner aesthetic with a sliver of sole underneath. This Summer, the model goes laceless in a Mary Jane-inspired 204V variant.
Sneakers and slippers have become intertwined this decade, with the widespread of comfort-first footwear. The trend can largely be traced back to the pandemic era, when many people were largely stuck at home and needed house shoes and slippers while still trying to maintain a sense of style. Sneaker brands like Nike, adidas, and New Balance leaned into this, redesigning some of their classics for more casual wear. Then came slim, laceless sneakers, which mix the minimal comfort approach with higher-end fashion. New Balance’s answer to this is the 204L, a low-profile silhouette combining their mesh and synthetic look with a barely-there sole unit. This Summer, the 204V will bring a new laceless form to the runner, removing the lacing system in favor of a Mary Jane-style velcro strap over the top of the foot. The model is primed to release next week, and will land in bold blue & orange colorways for its debut.

New Balance’s upcoming variant of the 204 silhouette, the laceless 204V, has been scheduled to release this month on July 15th, 2026. The Mary Jane-style sneaker will come in two colorways for its launch, Fan Blue and Neo Flame, both vibrant hues for colorful Summer fits. Pairs will be available through the NB website and select retailers, with a price tag of $120.
