Just as Americans celebrate the nation’s 250th Anniversary, Nike has unveiled two striking Air Max 90 colorways that couldn’t feel more patriotic, even without an American flag in sight. Arriving in completely monochromatic Royal Blue and University Red, each pair commits fully to its respective color, with everything from the mesh upper and leather overlays to the midsole and outsole dressed in a single shade.
The minimalist approach is what makes the duo so effective, resulting in two clean executions that just so happen to align perfectly with Independence Day celebrations. Longtime Air Max fans may also experience a sense of déjà vu; these upcoming releases inevitably recall the Air Max 90 Hyperfuse “USA” Pack from 2013, one of the silhouette’s most memorable drops from the modern version. Those releases became a sensation thanks to Ye (then Kanye West) wearing the pair during the Summer of 2013 before departing for adidas.
Unlike their 2013 predecessors, these new Air Max 90s stop short of explicitly referencing the United States. There are no stars, stripes, or patriotic insignias, just saturated blocks of red and blue that naturally invite the comparison.
The monochromatic Nike Air Max 90 collection is expected to arrive soon on Nike.com in women’s sizing for $140.
