Is the iron grip of the “Y2K movement” beginning to loosen? Well, probably not — the “what’s old is new again” chestnut remains just as relevant as ever, but we can give brands credit for speaking to those attacking throwback aesthetics with more than the mesh runners that are so abundant in everyone’s quivers.
“Visible tech” and chunky sole units are quickly building as the next category that footwear companies will need to represent, whether they’ve got the earnest archival styles to support it or not. Nike’s Shox continues to be a category leader, adidas’ Megaride platform appears to be a real priority for the Three Stripes this year, and New Balance drew up an entirely new design to get ahead of the curve with the ABZORB 2000. The silhouette is only gaining share in the Boston brand’s catalog as its introduction recedes further into the rear view; the “Slate Grey” at hand adding another to the pile. While the model already has several attention-grabbing colorways, this one plays things safer on a relative scale, allowing the everlasting combo of grey and black to handle the visuals while the hardware notes do the talking.
The New Balance 2000 “Slate Grey” is already listed on NewBalance.com for a February 23rd release, arriving as a part of a three-pack of new color options for that date. A $170 retail price is confirmed.
