For as much weight as the German giant put behind classics like the Superstar or innovations like the Aruku, it’s been the adidas adiZero EVO SL, a performance model by build and marketing, that’s emerged as their hottest lifestyle shoe. Indeed, the cutting-edge cushioning, lightweight upper construction, and approachable price point keeps the EVO in heavy rotation with the masses.

Now, the adiZero product is eyeing calendar year #3 on the shelves, and following tinkerings by the likes of Y-3, the mainline product is getting experimental. One such signal of that comes with the EVO SL “Equipment,” a more durable build no doubt made for trails and harsher applications of that ilk.

We’ll give credit to adi for sticking to the aforementioned selling points; the cushioning is consistent with any of the more conventional pairs we’ve seen to date, and thin yet sturdy overlays tack onto high abrasion areas, maintaining the feathery upper construction beneath. To round out the tougher hardware, a patch of Continental rubber beefs up the traction underfoot.

The adidas EVO SL “Equipment” Pack is already listed at overseas retailers with a March 1st release date, though it’s unclear whether that’ll hold for the stateside launch.
