In an industry dominated by far-ahead projections and leaks from multiple seasons down the road, it’s always tough to deliver snap reactions to the performance of new products. Despite that, the simplification of Nike’s running lineup into a three family, three rung matrix has brought a renewed sense of energy and purpose to the family.
Whereas Plus and Premium editions are no doubt the buzzier on the lifestyle front, each Icon series marches on in the everlasting quest for perfected performance. Taking a cue from the now inescapable Pegasus Premium, the just-revealed Nike Pegasus 42 brings a full-length, curved Zoom Air unit into its cushioning package, nestled into ReactX foam. You can of course still make out the notched curves in the upper, but this is a new upper entirely, constructed with heat-mapped insight for breathability atop of the techy platform.
As always with the vaunted Pegasus icon series, feedback from previous iterations informs the finer tweaks to the 42’s form; a roomier toe-box, more forefoot padding, and a spring structure that allows for 4mm of extra cushioning are some of the subtler touches. Overall, Nike plants that the new build results in a 15% energy return improvement over the 41, making good on Pegasus’ renewed purpose as “max responsiveness” as compared to Vomero’s cushioning and Structure’s stability.
The Nike Pegasus 42 launches on April 9th, clocking in with a $140 retail price. Catch official images of the three debut colorways just ahead.
