Kobe Brand may be nearing its most consequential moment since Nike formally established the division in 2023. Ahead of this year’s Nike Mamba Invitational, the brand has teased a new, unnamed Kobe model Bryant himself began developing but was tragically unable to see through to completion.

The reveal comes in unconventional fashion. Nike commissioned a piece from multidisciplinary artist @typcollection titled “Sole Obsession,” featuring the outsoles of every numbered Kobe model, including the Kobe AD, alongside a thirteenth, never-before-seen design pulled from the upcoming hoops shoe. No additional information about the model is available as of this writing, though that could change when the Mamba Invitational tips off in Los Angeles this weekend, August 8th and 9th.

While still relatively young, Kobe Brand appears positioned to follow a path similar to Jordan Brand, gradually expanding Kobe’s signature line into a full-fledged division and, potentially, something much larger in time. The brand has thus far been built primarily on Protro releases, lifestyle projects like the Kobe Air Force 1, and the exploits of the league’s de facto “Kobe guy” Jalen Brunson. Introducing an entirely new performance model, particularly one Kobe was involved in developing, represents a significant step.

No additional information regarding the new Kobe Bryant shoe has been announced as of this writing, but that could change in the near future.
