In New Balance’s most recent arc as a major player in the footwear space anew, there have been few instances where we could identify a trending aesthetic that they hadn’t already spoken to. As we noted in the middle of last year, one of those uncommon crossroads was in the “slim sole” space, a genuinely dominant footwear wave that somehow, the Boston brand hadn’t fully met just yet.

In uncanny timing, New Balance responded to that identification with the New Balance 204L in just weeks, and its marketing apparatus has placed it at the foreground of the catalog in the time since; Basketcase issued one of the brand’s buzzier collaborations of last year, and Rosalia quite literally just served as the face of a scalloped “Ribbon Pack” days before this article. Now filling another potential blind spot, the Boston brand follows its competitors’ footsteps with an “Animal Print” overhaul of the New Balance 204L.

We make that assessment with no particular judgment, but it’s impossible to contextualize these two colorways without noting that the adidas Samba, Nike Field General, and PUMA Speedcat have already touched this lane for other major players. Nonetheless, New Balance is creative in its application, utilizing zebra and cow print aesthetics in more subtle ways; those zoological patterns are scattered above more neutral bases, where the Rosalia-approved scalloped edges also appear.

The New Balance 204L “Animal Print” is already appearing at some retail partners, and the existence of official New Balance images only solidifies that a wide release should be coming soon.
