For a brand known for the “dad shoe,” New Balance sure knows how to get weird. Wonderfully weird, that is. The company that helped spark the viral sneaker-loafer movement with the New Balance 1906L is back with another mashup, this time transforming the ubiquitous New Balance 9060 into a techy new mule.

The standard 9060 pulls from the brand’s heralded 99X series, combining layered suede, leather, and mesh with a chunky ABZORB SBS midsole. This mule version veers into full-on gorpcore with a handful of key updates. The heel is removed in favor of a strap system, and the upper leans on thinner mesh and more synthetic detailing. A slimmer tongue and new toggle lacing setup continue the alterations, while the standard 9060 midsole is used underfoot.

Regular readers might remember this isn’t the first 9060 takedown. 2024 introduced the New Balance 8040, a suede sandal built on the same midsole. There’s also the New Balance 9060 X and “No Sew” versions, although both of those stick closer to the model’s standard silhouette.

The 9060 remains one of New Balance’s most popular models, so there’s a real path for these to catch on if the timing’s right. Expect multiple colorways in 2026 (likely Spring/Summer), including white, black, and classic grey options. Retail is set at $150. We’ll circle back with updates as more details emerge.
