Michael Jordan’s love of racing & competition are an essential part of his character, so much so that the former NBA star has his own racing team, 23XI. This week, the team shared a closer look at the custom Air Jordan 9 designed for their pit crew.

Michael Jordan co-founded 23XI Racing with NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin in 2020, bringing his competitive ethos to stock car racing and launching the team for the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season. The team’s name combines Jordan’s iconic No. 23 with Hamlin’s longtime No. 11, and Bubba Wallace drove the debut Toyota Camry, earning 23XI its first win and making history. Since then, the organization expanded to multiple full-time entries, added a third car, and built a cutting-edge facility in North Carolina. Jordan’s ownership helped elevate diversity and competitiveness in NASCAR, as well as bringing his signature Air Jordan style to the racetrack.

This week, while the bulk of our attention is fixated on the NBA All-Star Celebration in Los Angeles, 23XI is competing at the Daytona 500 in Florida. Thanks to their relationship with Michael Jordan, the 23XI pit crew team is rocking custom pairs of the Air Jordan 9, given exclusively to members of the organization for this weekend’s competition. The team shared a closer look at their special style, showing off a pitch black pair of the AJ9 in a suede upper, adding smooth leather mudguards and vibrant red Jumpman branding around the shoe.

This special-edition pair of the Air Jordan 9 is not currently expected to release to the public. Michael Jordan has largely kept the 23XI brand separate from his iconic Air Jordan line, with the exception of these occasional PE styles given to team members. However, we are not ready to rule out a future collaboration between 23XI and the Nike family quite yet.
