If you know, you know. In 2004, as part of an “Artist Series” that also produced pairs like the Stash x Air Max BW and Eminem x Air Max Burst, Nike collaborated with Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry on a brown and orange Air Rift limited to just 1,050 pairs, a largely forgotten link-up that’s since become something of a cult classic among devoted collectors. More than two decades later, Nike is bringing a remarkably similar look to the masses on the recently revived Air Rift 2, shown here via official images.

While this is not an official collaboration by any stretch, the sequel model does little to discourage speculation about its inspiration. From the overarching palette to the smallest accent details, nearly every shade is a close match. The outer portion arrives in Yukon Tan with College Navy Swooshes, while the inner mesh panels are rendered in Vivid Orange.

The materials, meanwhile, are very different. The original Air Rift has historically displayed a willingness to experiment with texture, with Halle Berry’s 2004 collaboration leaning heavily on suede. This Air Rift 2 instead retains the model’s standard mesh and neoprene construction.

Grail-inspired general releases often miss the mark, or, in the parlance of the sneaker community, come off as corny. In this instance, however, the hyper-niche reference feels worthy of celebration. With tabi footwear once again gaining momentum and the broader Air Rift franchise enjoying a renaissance through general releases and Kim Kardashian’s NikeSKIMS line, the timing feels particularly well judged.
