Any sneaker aficionado knows that limited stock numbers, premium materials, and/or high-level collaborative partners can propel a shoe to coveted status. Yet in the world of Air Jordans, few pairs are more sought-after than those with sample tags; the beta versions or completely abandoned colorways that never quite made it to the shelves.

Without much warning, one such pair has come to light, indicating where Jordan Brand may have taken the Jordan 5’s 35th anniversary in a parallel universe. While the shark-toothed silhouette remains in focus in 2026 via pairs like the Jordan 5 “Black/University Blue” or “Wolf Grey,” it received serious love last year: once grails like the “Tokyo,” twisted icons like the “Black Metallic Reimagined,” and collaborative efforts like AWAKE’s all led up to the “35th Anniversary” colorway proper, the final unassisted edition to hit the shelves.

That pair looms large over this beta version, sharing the complete 3M overhaul in the uppers seen on this “Dark Powder Blue” Jordan 5, cleverly working in a hallmark of the model for some fittingly shimmering celebratory airs. Save for a lack of drop shadow “23” text on the heel counter, this acts as a one-for-one palette swap, imbuing the shoe with a cooler atmosphere than the retail version. Look to the sample tag inside and you’ll find it also shares an initial Holiday ’25 release window.

We’ll leave a disclaimer that no official info has come to light regarding why these didn’t make it into public hands, but we can make some educated guesses. The rosy eventual release does make more conceptual sense, aligning with the traditional 35th anniversary gift of coral. Also, the aforementioned Jordan 5 “Black/University Blue” similarly champions UNC-like tonality; perhaps that overlap so close in the release calendar could’ve diminished both pairs inadvertently.

Regardless, any “what if” pair like the Air Jordan 5 “Dark Powder Blue” always manages to capture our attention. If the same is true for you, feast your eyes via the gallery below. Watch our Jordan Release Dates page for updates on shoes actually coming to the shelves.
