It may be just a hazy memory given the breakneck pace that New Balance has operated at in the past year and half, but the New Balance 2000 had a genuine mystique about it as it first hit the newswire. The retro-futuristic, visible tech addition to the catalog was on a real level something we had never seen the Boston brand experiment with before, as designer Charlotte Lee described to us around its launch and as cadres of company devotees saw for themselves with a range of curated Brazil-set first looks.

As the New Balance 2000 charges through its second calendar year on the shelves, it’s returning to where it all began, in more ways than one. Enlisting Brazil’s Viso Club, the original “Agate Blue” was dropped at an undisclosed location, with several dozen free pairs available to those who showed up first. Sneaker News can confirm that similar in-person activations are in the works for several global metropolitan areas, with Seoul, Washington D.C, and London all confirmed.

Though the 2000 now holds several dozen distinct color-ups in its short history, unquestionably the debut aquatic version is towards the top of the list, not least of which for helping introduce a true mold-breaker in the brand’s catalog.
