It may be easy to forget given that shoes like the New Balance 204V or New Balance 1890A have taken tech runners and flung them into far-off categories, but what’s now a catalog-wide ideology for the Boston brand was initially forged on the New Balance 1906R. Its family of offshoots is almost too wide to enumerate, but by our count, the 1906A, 1906D, 1906E, 1906F (twice, as a matter of fact), 1906L, 1906U, and 1906W have brought about new takes on the mesh and rubber model.

The lattermost of those, the New Balance 1906W, finds its intrigue in a geometric webbing that replaces the usual thick layered stripes on the base shoe, in the process building out a sleeker, more refined overall profile. Despite that compositional choice, our latest sighting of the sneaker comes with two distressed metallic colorways, almost toying with the industrial vibes from the 1906A by echoing brushed, worn metal across the sidewalls.

That central concept is here brought to life across two aligned colorways. On the black pair, that damaged atmosphere is unmissable, as the stark contrast between shimmering side “cages” and a jet black foundation makes the wear stand out all the more. On the other, a trademark grey flooded look, that synthetic webbing almost disappears into the shoe, showcasing what’s more of a fade than a pronounced graphic.
