Much the same way they’ve done for idol-turned-compatriot Michael Jordan, Beaverton continues to trawl through Kobe Bryant’s on-the-court and off-the-court legacy as his footwear empire marches along. 2026 has to be a high point in that regard, turning to previously unexplored concepts like his friendship with Pau Gasol or The Forum as a venue, where Bryant first began his path to Los Angeles immortality.
Though the Nike x Kobe franchise now has several lifestyle branches with which to explore those narratives, namely the Dunk Low and Air Force 1, his roundball exploits continue to be the most fertile ground for inspiring new colorways. The Kobe Bryant x Nike Air Force 1 Protro “Lord of the Rings” looks to an unorthodox place for just that, revisiting his trip to Manhattan’s iconic Rucker Park for a new take on the Uptown.
In 2002, fresh off securing the final ring in his and the Lakers’ three-peat, Bryant’s work ethic and insatiable thirst for success led him to the Harlem streetball venue. Though rained out midway through the game, Bryant’s overall superstardom and some truly dazzling moments before the cancellation made his appearance the stuff of legend almost instantly. One of the park’s two-man announcing team, Hannibal, deemed the multi-time champion “The Lord of the Rings” on that day, inspiring the shoe featured here.
On a footwear level, the moment was particularly notable because of its timing. While the orange-on-white colorway he sported that day would lead to a 2020 adaptation (going from Mid to Low), wearing Bruce Kilgore’s design was a sign of things to come; his adidas deal had expired just days before his appearance, and he’d go on to sign with Nike in the months following.
Back to the shoe at hand, classic NYC Swoosh branding on the heel and an orange Sheath logo push beyond what fans received in 2020, though that edition lends many of its design choices to this Mamba mentality re-up. It’s currently unknown when this pair will come to the public, but we can comfortably expect a Fall/Winter debut. Catch advance looks below as we await more info.
