Thirty years after Space Jam arrived in theaters, Jordan Brand is celebrating one of the most important intersections of basketball, sneakers, and pop culture in its history. The 1996 film helped immortalize the Air Jordan 11, creating a legacy that has endured through generations of sneakerheads and basketball fans.
But the 30th anniversary arrives at a particularly interesting moment for Jordan Brand.
The annual Holiday Air Jordan 11 has historically been the company’s most important release of the year, drawing enormous crowds to malls every December and generating demand that few other sneakers could match. However, the current landscape is considerably different. Air Jordan Retros are no longer the guaranteed sellouts they once were, and the abundance of archival releases has seemingly diminished the urgency that once surrounded the Jumpman.
That makes the return of the Air Jordan 11 “Space Jam” particularly consequential, but if any Jordan Retro can still recreate the excitement of the brand’s glory days, it’s this one.
Jordan Brand certainly isn’t treating the occasion lightly. What initially began as a two-shoe project eventually expanded into a 12-SKU collection that explores the film’s characters, production, and mythology in ways that go far beyond the familiar black-and-blue sneakers. Sneaker News was invited to preview a sample of the full collection while also geting a first look at unreleased and earlier concepts.
