The involvement of Greg Betty in Vans’ recent resurgence is no longer an “if you know, you know” sort of thing. With high-profile podcast appearances waxing eloquent on the state of play in streetwear and getting in deep about his impact on his former employer, the now Jordan Brand designer has risen to a level of notoriety that’s truly hard to come by as an individual creator in this industry. On our end, that means that any of his moodboard dumps are worth stopping for; another is at hand with the Vans “Sunday Best Pack.”

As has been the case for much of this Vans output of late, the “Sunday Best” Slip-On arrives as a two-pack, utilizing alternating patchwork layouts in cream and white and grey/blue multicolor. The beating heart of this capsule is Betty’s island roots, where the titular “dressed to the nines” aspect informs dueling strips of fabric that run horizontally across each shoe; plaids, florals, checks, and everything in between. As he explicates, there’s also a clear tie to Junya Watanabe, famed for his mash-up takes on traditional shirting. Or, per the man himself:

[The Vans “Sunday Best” capsule is] inspired by my two favorite “J” words: Junya & Jamaica. Vamp and side panels show an asymmetrical custom stitched pattern comprised of different fabrics all sourced from the same factory that were reminiscent of materials traditionally used for Black & Caribbean ‘Sundays Best’ attire. Pattern fabrics include linen, poplin cotton, canvas, Oxford shirting, floral tapestry, jacquard houndstooth, gingham prints, classics striped shirting, and micro-daisy prints — like the Jamaican motto goes, “out of many, one.” Suede heel and canvas binding. Clean sidewalls. – @betties__
