With any novel New Balance model, it doesn’t take long after the silhouette becomes a part of the fabric before it begins to change shape. There are countless examples of that, from the 1906 Loafer, to the 9060 Mule, to the 1890 Moc, the latter a reinvention that took place before the actual parent shoe even touched down.

To date, the New Balance 2000‘s chief contribution in that regard is the “Liquid Metal” series, a jagged reformatting in the uppers headed by “Protection Pack” designer Yue Wu. To signal its next chapter, the ABZORB powered sneaker returned to where it all began. First looks at the New Balance 2000 Sleek arrive with the help of Quadro Creations, a Brazil-based outfit that makes this a full circle moment; the 2000’s initial reveals came in Sao Paolo.

While the “vis tech” direction of the New Balance 2000 makes it a bold step out of NB’s comfort zone, the build of the upper skews traditional, relatively speaking. Layers of synthetics branch over a mesh foundation, sticking true to the Y2K inspos that light the silhouette. The New Balance ABZORB 2000 Sleek is a complete inversion, bringing a thinned layer around the entire silhouette in a shroud-like envelopment, washing away and distressing as you work towards the foot entrance.

Crucially, this also overwhelms the typical N brand at the center of the quarter panel, forcing it into a no-sew arrangement toward the toe. Otherwise, the shape and sole unit remain intact, though Quadro Creations utilizes some home country aesthetics with charmed attachments for this runway debut.

With this coming as part of a Fall/Winter showcase, we’re expecting the New Balance 2000 Sleek to touch down sometime between July and the end of the year. Note that sources associated with New Balance indicate that “2000S” may be the official launch title.
