As long as sneaker-obsessed athletes keep clocking in at the Philip H. Knight campus, Air Max will always remain close to Nike’s heart. We’ve come a long way since the category’s debut in the 80s, and it’s only gotten better with time. Retro models have long since become lifestyle icons, while Nike’s relentless pursuit of innovation continues to push the line forward.
While there’s plenty of buzz around this year’s new Air Max Day model in the Air Liquid Max, March is also a good time to shine a light on the category as a whole. We’ve chosen to spotlight three of the Swoosh’s hottest Air Max models: one new and two of the old-school variety. The Air Max 95 continues its “big bubble” era with plenty of new styles featuring OG-inspired hardware, dialing things back to the 90s and early 2000s when the model utilized a larger, seamed Air unit. Tinker Hatfield’s Air Max 90 remains an icon in its own right, readily available in several colorways rooted in 90s lore. And the Air Max DN8 offers a stylish option for the modern era, designed with respect for the past but with clear propulsion toward the future.
With warm weather on the horizon, the time is ripe for a fresh pair. Keep scrolling to make your way through our Air Max shopping guide and hit Nike.com to check out the full selection.
Sergio Lozano’s best and most iconic sneaker is still riding the momentum built during its 30th anniversary last year. Gradient styles like the “Neon” need no introduction, but the Swoosh’s catalog runs much, much deeper. The Air Max 95 “Emerald” aka “Black Border” is still up for grabs, as is a low-key black leather option featuring some tasteful reflective touches. We’re also drawn to Nike’s “Camo” reinterpretation, a solid option for city dwellers who like to cosplay Midwesterners.
It wasn’t too long ago that the Air Max 90 was Nike’s most hyped Air Max model, and for good reason. The Tinker Hatfield-designed silhouette is a visual masterpiece, maintaining a strong and loyal fanbase while remaining a consistent mover year after year. Seasoned collectors might find a winner in the “Blue Lightning” colorway pictured above, which shares some strong similarities with one of the model’s originals. If you’re a “less is more” kind of sneaker fan, the Nike website currently also has a handful of nice greyscale options available.
Last year’s Air Max Day model still has plenty left in the tank. The Nike Air Max DN8 combines Dynamic Air technology with a design reminiscent of the cult classic Air Max 96, standing out with wavy ridge cutouts that correspond to its eight Air chambers. New to the Nike website is a multi-color “Pink Gaze” look featuring glow-in-the-dark detailing, available alongside a “Light Orewood Brown” colorway with “Volt” accents. For something a bit more refined, there’s also a black leather option that leans less sporty and more dressed-up.
