Summer sneakers are starting to hit shelves, offering up lighter colors and more breathable construction. Asics is approaching this season with a ‘two birds, one stone’ attitude, dropping their GEL-1130 in a new Mule form soon.

Asics’ retro-styled runners have been everywhere over the past few years. The Japanese brand’s archives are filled to the brim with mesh and synthetic models that skyrocketed in popularity since 2020, and have remained a constant in the ever-changing aftermarket, according to press releases from StockX. One of the biggest recent hits for Asics is the GEL-1130, a 2008 running shoe now repurposed for their SportStyle line. The model features the standard mesh underlay with synthetic overlays, but its minimal use of paneling makes it a little more timeless than some counterparts. This Summer, Asics is delivering a fresh take on the model, removing the shoe’s heel sections to create a slip-on Mule sneaker. We’ve seen plenty of heel-less sneaker classic in the past few years, including New Balance’s 2002R, the Jordan 1 Golf, and many, many more. Asics has dabbled from time to time, mostly with Kiko Kostadinov’s Novalis line Styrax but this adaptation of an existing model is new territory.

ASICS GEL-1130 MULE RELEASE INFORMATION

Asics’ new open-back variant of the GEL-1130 has not been officially announced yet, but seems primed for a release in the next few weeks, before we formally get into Summer 2026. The popular runner, now without a proper heel, will come in three simple colors at launch; black, grey, and white with brown. Pairs will be available from both Asics and select retailers, with pricing likely similar to the 1130’s standard $110 MSRP.
