Action Bronson’s talents have been leveraged in multiple areas of the New Balance catalog since the cultural maven and Boston footwear powerhouse joined forces, adding fuel to already-popular Made in USA models and even dipping its toe into the performance space via FuelCell and Minimus sneakers. As successful and widely-known collaborators are known to do, Action has now been tapped to serve as the frontman for a new model. Enter the New Balance 1890, set to debut in two Action Bronson collab styles before making an earnest rollout later on.

Following an IG story teaser last November, Action and friends have gone live with a studio-quality reel and official names for the two styles. The blue colorway is called the “Cyborg Tears,” while the beige is dubbed the “Hornet Tusk.”

The New Balance 1890 features a segmented midsole inspired by the New Balance 2002. Not the New Balance 2002R, which came to life in 2020. We’re talking about the original New Balance 2002 from 2010, a short-lived Made in USA model once touted as the brand’s most premium, innovative, and expensive running silhouette. The upper, meanwhile, makes use of multiple teardrop motifs around the forefoot and heel, rooting itself in the 2000s/2010s while clearly distinguishing itself from cuts like the 1906R, 2002R, 740, and others that are far more comparable to one another.

Given all its quirks, the 1890 is a perfect silhouette for Action to work off with his signature colorful design language. It again appears the brand let Action have free rein over materials. The “Cyborg Tears” features dotted blue mesh and synthetic overlays with silver edging, hence the name. The “Hornet Tusk,” meanwhile, opts for beige leather overlays and an open mesh base akin to a hornet’s nest. Both come with rope laces and a smattering of colorful accents.

The Action Bronson x New Balance 1890 “Cyborg Tears” and “Hornet Tusk” pack doesn’t have a concrete release date yet, but Action Bronson drops generally come in the weeks following official teasers. See in-hand shots below and stay tuned for more info.
