How does the “imitation is the highest form of flattery” truism apply to intra-brand mimicry? It’s a philosophical question we’re pondering when it comes to recent Nike Air Max releases; the “Neon” series back in March that brought Sergio Lozano’s hi-vis colorway onto a host of peers and a subsequent run of “Pink Foam” pairs have seen Nike run back what the Air Max 95 started on older and younger siblings alike.
If nothing else, it speaks to the importance of the silhouette in Nike’s roster, now elevated to a position where the implied success of upcoming pairs is enough to justify adjacent efforts. To whit, we’re still awaiting the official release of the Air Max 95 “Hot Curry,” yet its steely uppers and fiery interplay have already branched onto the Air Max TL 2.5. It’s no surprise that the blocking bears fruit on this later cousin, having already served dutifully in those aforementioned hi-vis efforts. If nothing else, it offers a different flavor for those taken with the overall aesthetic but with hangups regarding the Air Max 95 in particular.
The Nike Air Max TL 2.5 “Hot Curry” should be coming to shelves in the coming weeks, almost assuredly commanding the usual $180 retail price upon arrival.
