Following a launch colorway inspired by Ronaldo Nazário’s original Mercurial R9 boot, the Air Max Joga Bonito is taking on a new makeup steeped in a different kind of Brazilian sneaker lore. The Air Max 95 x Mercurial R9 hybrid has now surfaced in “Neon” for Fall 2026, recalling the former model’s iconic original colorway and one of the most storied sneaker moments in World Cup history.
En route to their third straight World Cup championship match in 2002, Brazil’s national team, namely icons like Ronaldo Fenômeno and Ronaldinho Gaúcho, were famously spotted wearing the Air Max 95 “Neon” throughout the tournament, a look deeply entrenched in both Brazilian off-pitch culture and sneaker lore at large. Now that same “Neon” makeup falls on the Air Max Joga Bonito, itself a Brazil-centric hybrid combining the upper of the original Mercurial R9 boot with the midsole of the Air Max 95.
Official retailer images show a multi-toned grey upper, black midsole, white interior, and the titular Neon color on the Swoosh and big bubble Air unit. The timing is admittedly unfortunate given Brazil’s recent elimination at the hands of Erling Haaland and Norway, though the release might serve as some well-deserved retail therapy for heartbroken fans.
