How many new takes on the old classics is too many? In the wake of Elliot Hill’s comments in the latest Nike earnings call, evidently Beaverton does have a limit, announcing rollbacks on the heavy emphasis on Retro Jordan product, to take hold in 2027 and beyond. Yet outside of the Jumpman and select Swoosh staples, there’s still room for the shelf-stockers, the web store warriors, to iterate on well-established design, something the Air Max 90 continues to exemplify in its fourth decade on shelves.
By way of iterations like the “Wave Pack” or camo-coated editions, the Air Max 90 has been a canvas for the experimental design touch we’ve seen take hold on a shoe like the Air Force 1. Still, variations on the “Infrared” blocking will be in vogue for as long as Tinker Hatfield’s design is. This “Light Smoke Grey” colorway does exactly that by turning down the saturation, utilizing comprehensive neutral hues to coat the always-on icon for a new season.
