At this point, New Balance’s output of entirely new silhouettes is nearing a point of absurdity. We’ve been tracking inductees like the 1890, 1954, Gator Run, Ellipse, and so many others, but it’s not even close to the full scope of their innovations. On a more casual level, they’ve brought even more newness to the shelves for the general consumer. To our eye, their latest threads the needle between the true sneakerhead and the everyday customer, as the New Balance 950 comes into view.

Eagle-eyed readers will know that this isn’t the absolute first time we’ve seen this silhouette; rising NBA star and potential face of New Balance hoops Cooper Flagg sported an all-white for a “tunnel walk” in April. In these detailed shots, much of our intial analysis holds true; this functions like a middle ground between the simplistic style of the T500 with the basketball inspo of a model like the 550. To whit, the overlays feature the same wavy linework as that retro hoops shoe. The model’s logo on the tongue only furthers that hardwood connection. Described on retail channels as “something cleaner and more modern than a reissue,” it’s clear that the 550/650 legacy is getting a fresh coat of paint here, made slimmer and sleeker for shifting sentiments towards “low-pro” and away from the bulky hallmarks from the start of the decade.
