Nike’s Kobe line has returned in force over the past few years, through the Protro format. This week, the Swoosh unveiled their latest addition, the Kobe X, positioned as their most advanced Protro yet.

Kobe Bryant pursued greatness in everything he did. The Mamba is one of the greatest basketball players of all time, with multiple NBA championships, scoring titles, and Olympic medals under his belt. His footwear line with Nike also achieved incredible heights, and remains one of their most popular player models long after he retired from the court. Back in 2018, the Swoosh proposed their first retro of his signature shoes, starting with the Kobe 1. Bryant insisted that they update the silhouette’s outdated tech, making them still viable on professional basketball courts, and the performance retro, or Protro, was born.

Fast forward to 2026, and Nike’s Kobe Protro line has updated nearly every shoe in his arsenal. The 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9 have all returned to shelves, and are worn on basketball courts by some of the best players in the world, including Caitlin Clark and Jalen Brunson. Today, Nike announced their next Protro release, the Kobe X. Originally released in 2015 as the tenth player signature, the X’s sleek design and powerful tech inside made it a favorite amongst ball players. The team behind the Protro line worked hard to update the shoe with their best available tech, making it the most advanced shoe in the entire lineup, while maintaining the classic styling. The upper is constructed from engineered mesh with taped overlays for stability, while the midsole tech has been replaced entirely. Full-length Zoom Strobel and Cushlon 3.0 foam take the place of the previous Lunarlon and Zoom heel unit configuration, while the traction pattern has been updated to provide better grip for quick cuts at speed.

The Kobe X will debut later this month, cast in the all-white “Halo” colorway that has heralded each new Protro model. In addition to several more engineered mesh pairs coming later this year, Nike also shared that new Flyknit editions with ZoomX cushioning will arrive in 2027.
