Anyone who’s been thinking about sneakers for more than a few months knows a certain play that brands run: as a new model hits the market, collaborations help assist the rollout effort and bring excitement to a new in-house priority. New Balance is well-versed in those X’s and O’s, something we’ve seen with the New Balance 1000, handed to KITH and Joe Freshgoods, or kicks like the RC56 or revived 991v1, given new life with the help of Aime Leon Dore.
Yet the New Balance 1890 has to be the starriest new silhouette in recent memory. Listing off the designers who have issued takes on the hybrid shoe reads like a modern NB Mount Rushmore: Action Bronson, Joe Freshgoods, JJJJound, and now, Stone Island. After a teaser post on social media hinted at a soccer focus, images of two Stone Island x New Balance 1890 pairs hint at either a wide focus for that upcoming capsule or another release coming down the line.
Though both of SI’s efforts here lean on restrained palettes of off-whites and neutral grays, where either one truly succeeds is in their textures. Shaggy suede defines the teardrop overlays at the heel while a checkerboard pattern peeks through, debossed synthetics set on the N logo, and sleek graphic layers land toward the toe. As with any shared design, co-branding details are in heavy supply, concentrated here on the tongue. The black pair provides some visual contrast with neon green cushioning below the heel, while its brighter counterpart sticks to a wholly earthy script to round out its arrangement.
Again, firm release info for the Stone Island x New Balance 1890 hasn’t surfaced just yet, but we’ll keep you in the loop with any additional details as they come to light. Catch some in-hand shots below while we parse all that out.
