One of the most memorable moments in Kobe Bryant hoops lore is getting another sneaker tribute. Official Nike images have surfaced of a new Kobe 9 Elite Low Protro inspired by Bryant’s legendary appearance at New York City’s Rucker Park on July 18th, 2002. The colorway originally surfaced in 2025 as an EYBL Player Exclusive, but its appearance through official brand imagery now points toward a retail release.

The design features a predominantly dark blue Flyknit upper accented by Aqua Mint and light orange at the heel, a combination that could potentially nod to New York City and the Statue of Liberty. The clearest connections to the shoe’s inspiration are hidden behind the tongue; it features an embroidery of the date of Kobe’s appearance (July 18th, 2002), marking the date of Kobe’s Rucker Park appearance. It’s joined by the hallowed ground’s cross-streets of 155 St. & 8th Ave., while “Straight To The Court” is printed outside to heel.

Nike had recently revisited this moment through the Kobe Bryant x Air Force 1 Low Protro “Rucker Park” released earlier in August, re-creating the white-and-orange look of the Air Force 1 Mid that Bryant famously wore during his appearance. The game itself became an instant piece of streetball folklore, with Bryant earning the nickname “Lord of the Rings” from Rucker announcer Hannibal following the Lakers’ third consecutive NBA championship.

A release date has yet to be confirmed, but with official Nike images now in circulation and a $210 MSRP confirmed, a retail launch appears increasingly likely. Stay tuned for additional details.
