Reebok is taking another major step in its performance running revival with the unveil of the SpeedShifter, its first performance running shoe equipped with a full-length carbon plate.

The modern super-shoe era began with Nike, which debuted prototypes of its carbon-plated racing technology at the 2016 Olympics before launching the Vaporfly 4% in 2017. The combination of a stiff carbon plate, highly responsive foam, and lightweight construction sparked something of an arms race in running, with adidas, ASICS, Saucony, and others eventually developing their own answers in following years.

Reebok is admittedly late to the super-shoe arms race, but it’s entering at a relatively approachable price. The $220 SpeedShifter sits below some of the category’s headline models including Nike’s $270 Alphafly 3, while adidas and ASICS have pushed the concept to the extreme with models that command $500 MSRPs, although in no way are we saying that Reebok’s entry sits at the same table of as the adios Pro Evo series or the Metaspeed Ray.

The SpeedShifter does in fact check many of those same boxes. Its AccelerPlate is a full-length carbon plate sandwiched between two layers of HYPERFLOAT, a new ATPU foam compound engineered for high energy return, cushioning, and stability. A breathable minimalist upper keeps weight down while a three-piece high-abrasion rubber outsole provides traction and durability. The SpeedShifter weighs 7.4 ounces and features an 8mm heel-to-toe drop.
