Of the many fashion sub-cultures born out of Tokyo’s streets, the signature style of the “Harajuku girl” is unquestionably the most recognizable. Clad in overtly accessorized outfits and layers upon layers of colors and patterns, this distinct look exudes self-expression and individuality in contrast with the rather orderly look of Japanese citizens.
Nike has created a special edition LD-1000 release inspired by this adorably strange look. Using the classic running shoe as its bland base, the Beaverton brand has added a multitude of patterns like the gingham plaid on the Swoosh, polka dots and the heel, and a dots of planets, stars, and snowflakes on the white woolen upper.

Utilizing an eclectic mix of materials, this sneaker also makes use of a furry tongue, a plush surface on the heel and toe, and a fuzzy finish on the white laces. The finishing touch: a star-shaped plush that comes attached to the laces.
Firm release date information hasn’t been shared just yet, but these are expected to launch this Holiday ’25 season exclusively in women’s sizing.
Harajuku isn’t just about this oddball style either; it’s also a major cultural hub in the sneaker scene, referenced by atmos in the upcoming Air Max 95 “HRJK”.
