Copenhagen is churning out excellent, minimal style, with brands like Our Legacy and mfpen leading the way. The latter is jumping into the sneaker game next year, teaming up with New Balance on a pair of the 992.

mfpen put down roots back in 2015, under the direction of founder Sigurd Bank. Armed with a background in garment production, Bank noticed how much high-end fabric was sitting in warehouses, unused by luxury brands and gathering dust. He began buying up deadstock rolls, and crafting small collections of his own design. mfpen formally became a brand in 2017, and has been steadily growing in the years since. Still based in Copenhagen, the fledgling label is inspired by three key tenets, simplicity, functionality, and sustainability. Each collection is produced in small runs, based entirely on how much fabric is available. Their silhouettes are loose, comfortable, and timeless, creating well-rounded assortments of apparel that are effortlessly cool and simple.

mfpen has produced plenty of footwear in the ten years they’ve been crafting garments, but next year will see their official entry into the world of sneakers. During a recent runway show for SS27, the label unveiled a project with New Balance, whose penchant for finding exciting new collaborators has struck again. The silhouette of choice for their debut is the 992, the 2006 runner that has become a staple of NB’s lifestyle lineup, particularly through the Made in USA program. mfpen’s take on the model is at first glance, quite simple. The model comes dressed in classic NB light grey shades, paired with an off-white mesh base. Bridging the two layers are pieces of shiny metallic silver, while white laces dotted with black round out the look, and exposed foam tongues add a vintage vibe. The final piece of the shoe is the branding, or rather, lack thereof. The signature N logo has been stripped from both sidewalls of the 992, leaving behind the faintest trace of an outline, a very bold approach to a New Balance collaboration.

MFPEN X NEW BALANCE 992 RELEASE INFORMATION

The upcoming collaboration from Copenhagen label mfpen and New Balance has no set release just yet, but the pair will be included in the brand’s SS27 collection, coming early next year. The new team-up highlights a fan-favorite silhouette, the 992, dressing the retro runner in a classic grey and white build with metallic silver accents. Most notably, the N logos have been removed, leaving behind a faint outline in their absence. Pairs will likely be limited, releasing just from the two partners, with a hefty price tag attached.
