The Nike Alpha Project was an ambitious turn-of-the-century collection aimed to deliver the next generation of performance footwear. This year, the Air Max 2000 makes its return for the first time since new millennium.

Nike’s archives are chock full of weird, experimental sneakers from their decades of innovation. In the late 1990s, the Swoosh released an extensive collection of brand new models under the Alpha Project line, starting in 1999 and stretching into the 2000s. Alpha Project was meant to push the boundaries of footwear by identifying and solving performance issues and deliver the most innovative solutions possible. The line gave us some truly iconic sneakers, including the Air Presto, the Shox technology, and the Air Flightposite.

In 2000, Nike released a new Air Max model, designated by its year of release. the Air Max 2K featured a huge exposed Air bag under the rear of the shoe, and two more tucked under the forefoot. Up top, the model used a molded mesh upper with TPU inserts for stability, and a rubber shell covering the lower half of the lacing system. The Air Max 2000 has been dormant for over two decades, but is now set for a return in 2026. The model’s return was first leaked as a Supreme collaboration early this year, and today we have a first look at an in-line triple black colorway of the silhouette.

Nike has yet to make any official announcements regarding their upcoming Air Max 2000 retro, though the appearance of retailer images this week points to a debut sometime in Fall 2026. One of the initial releases for the Y2K era silhouette will be a triple black rendition, casting the entire shoe in an inky shade with some glossy accent panels. Pairs will be available from both Nike and select retailers, and pricing is expected to land somewhere around $200.
