Is Air Max Day back? It’s the question that we and many others have asked as the full breadth of Nike’s March 26th has come into view, bringing together the titans of old in the Air Max 95 and Air Max 90 with the silhouettes forging into the future, championed by the all-new Air Liquid Max and the innovative Nike Air Max 1000.

Clearly, the latter is front of mind within Beaverton. The sportswear giant has just announced the “Air Works” program, a design opportunity handed down to eight individual designers from Beijing, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, New York, Paris, Shanghai, and Tokyo in what’s no doubt an intentional play to represent the worldwide community.

The initiative will allow that handful of creatives to get the red carpet treatment in Beaverton, invited to work alongside Swoosh designers, external partners, and 3D-printing mavens Zellerfeld to create their own 3D-printed Air Max silhouettes. Even before they cook up their inventions, there are already plans for how they’ll come to the world: all eight designers’ work will be produced as a limited, friends-and-family exclusive, to be revealed in the coming year in anticipation of Air Max Day 2027.

This bespoke series follows a general widening of the Zellerfeld x Nike Air Max family. Though the Air Max 1000 remains the most prolific under that banner, the Air Max 95000 demonstrated that the partnering brands weren’t content with just one silhouette.
