For adidas, the future of footwear lies in additive manufacturing. We’re nearly a decade removed from the debut of the Futurecraft 4D, a pioneering 3D-printed runner that opened the door for several more innovations in the running category. Last year’s all-new adidas Climacool marked another landmark as the brand’s first fully 3D-printed sneaker, a bold proclamation of what’s possible and what’s to come. Now, via the Project R.A.P. (Radical Athlete Perception) initiative, adidas is branching its additive processes into other sports, starting July 2026 with the brand’s first-ever 3D-printed basketball shoe.

First unveiled during March Madness, the adidas BB.01 features a 3D-printed midsole engineered to deliver both impact absorption and stability. Darker zones underfoot highlight high-impact areas, while the traction consists of clean, slanted lines. The silhouette aligns with recent Harden models, distinguished by a padded inner bootie and a 3D-printed outer shell, the lattice structure on the sides implying excellent breathability. One caveat worth flagging is that the shoe weighs roughly 15.13 oz (428 grams), making it heavier than most of today’s top hoops shoes.

This is merely an early step in the trajectory of Project R.A.P. – adidas also debuted a 3D-printed soccer cleat earlier this year, with a 3D-printed American football cleat also in the pipeline.
