Some might say that this is the first true retro of the black tongue Jordan 5 “Fire Red.” This is the first retro to feature both “Nike Air” on the heel and “23” stitching in this specific numbering style, taking after the original colorway to a tee. The black tongue Jordan 5 previously returned in 2006 and 2013, but both of those releases featured Jumpman logos on the heel. The latter also featured a different, more rounded “23” font that may have irked some purists.
Two versions of the Jordan 5 “Fire Red” released in 1990, one of which serves as the inspiration behind this 2025 retro. The other featured a silver tongue, red “Nike Air” text, an inverted black/red midsole, and no “23” stitching on the lateral side. Both versions have retro’d multiple times since their debut, but the silver tongue has historically been more common.

When did the Air Jordan 5 come out?
The Air Jordan 5 debuted in 1990 in four colorways; “Black Metallic,” “Grape,” and two “Fire Red” looks, one with a black tongue and another with a silver tongue. Michael Jordan would win his first NBA championship wearing the Air Jordan 6 in 1990-91, but the Jordan 5 was his go-to earlier on that season.
Who designed the Air Jordan 5?
Who else? The Air Jordan 5 was designed by the legendary Tinker Hatfield, who delivered a sneaker inspired by World War II fighter planes, particularly the P-51 Mustang. Shark-tooth detailing on the midsole is the model’s hallmark design element, but the Jordan 5 was also the first basketball sneaker to feature reflective material (located on the tongue).
How much does the Air Jordan 5 cost?
Most Air Jordan 5s currently cost $215 in adult sizes, but collaborations (like the recent Awake NY 5s) are often marked up to around $230-$250. The standard price breakdown for kids’ sizes is as follows; Grade School ($160), Pre-School ($100), Toddler ($85).
