At a time when every Jordan retro that sits on shelves sparks another round of redundant thinkpieces about the state of Nike Inc. at large, the “Black Pack” has been a massive win. It’s not necessarily a huge moneymaker, as Jordan Brand has produced only limited quantities of each style, but plenty in the space (yours truly included) have been calling the pack some of the brand’s best work in recent memory. An agreeable, almost-all-black colorway, unique and slightly more premium materials, and models that have historically seen fewer releases than oversaturated pairs like the 1, 3, and 4. All three factors have come together to create a winner, and perhaps a lesson for Jordan Brand to take with it as it looks to right its business over the next few years.
There’s also something to be said for the 232323232323 platform launch. Jordan Brand seems eager to tap into the lookbook-esque, vagueposting mystery content synonymous with big fashion houses, with the whole rollout arriving in the wake of some major internal shakeups within the SNKRS app division. Nike Inc. recently called out “premium positioning” as a key focus for Jordan Brand moving forward, and the checkout experience is part of that.
For a model like the Air Jordan 15, with its polarizing reputation and considerably smaller catalog of past releases, it’s not much of a stretch to say the “Black Pack” edition could go down as one of its best colorways ever. The black treatment does well to conceal some of the model’s more controversial eccentricities, namely its protruding tongue, while the snakeskin covering the side panels adds a premium twist that feels right at home.
