Even at its outset, it was clear that the New Balance 2000 would open a new chapter for the Boston brand, merging their strenght in retro, Y2K-inspired design with a fresh foray into the world of visible tech.

The maximalist model has fared well in that uncharted territory, but as always, New Balance was unafraid to tinker in the margins, even when it came to a “brand new toy.” Designer Yue Wu has headed the “Liquid Metal” concept for the New Balance 2000, swapping out the no-sew, rounded overlays from base editions for sharp, rigid counterparts. After dropping off a monochromatic debut offering, the model is itself pushing forward with more experimental color stories. The “Silver Metallic/Oregano” New Balance 2000 at hand almost reminds of Salehe Bembury’s “Heat Be Hot” for its pairing of chrome and magma gradients, while a “Cortado” tinged edition evokes a far duskier arrangement.

The New Balance 2000 “Liquid Metal” in “Silver Metallic/Oregano” is already hitting stateside retailers, likely indicating that a wider drop via official channels shouldn’t be too far behind. The same $170 retail price from the two previous pairs is intact.
