This reinterpretation preserves that grounded quality while repositioning the shoe as a lifestyle object.

Pharrell has described the FLAT EARTHER as a counterpoint to the Jellyfish: one lets you float, while the other brings you back toward the earth, emphasizing grounded-ness and balance. That’s VIRGINIA as reinterpretation—proof that moving footwear forward doesn’t always require starting from scratch, which suggests that more archival models could be brought into the umbrella.

If the Jellyfish demonstrates expression and the Flat Earther demonstrates reinterpretation, the upcoming VIRGINIA Watermoc pushes the project toward something else entirely: experimentation.

The Watermoc traces its roots to the adidas Equipment Water Moc from 1997, footwear originally created for amphibious activity. VIRGINIA takes that specialized concept and reconsiders what a modern technical water shoe can look like outside of its original context.

A lightweight, water-minded upper forms the foundation, while Pharrell adds a distinctive securing system that stretches from the medial collar across the foot before locking into place on the lateral side through an elastic cord. Underneath, aggressive traction and a grooved sole reference other outdoor-focused chapters from the adidas archive.

It’s an unusual combination of references, technologies, and purposes packed into a risky silhouette, and that’s what makes the Watermoc such an interesting expression of VIRGINIA. The project began with a specific performance purpose and asks how decades of adidas design knowledge can be reconstructed for an entirely different moment.
