To be blunt, Nike is constantly replaying its own singles; from the endless bring-backs of retro silhouettes to cross-model revivals of iconic colorways (see the Book 2 and the Spiridon, or the recent Air Tech Challenge II “Back to the Future.”) Even in more metatextual bounds, the Bill Bowerman series or the “Shoe Dog” Air Force 1 demonstrate how the names of the original founders of the company still ring out to this day.

Bruce Kilgore’s design has had its own run of backwards-facing editions; the Nike Air Force 1 ’01 is all the proof you need, turning back the clock to a collector-loved composition that’s set to run parallel to the modernized ’07 build. The Nike Air Force 1 “Air Soul” keeps that idea going. It might avoid detection at first, seeing as the fuzzy oversized laces and black patent exteriors would be noteworthy enough on their own merits.

However, cut to the insoles or the tongues, and you’ll see how the Uptown gasses itself up on this colorway. Call-outs to the “Original Six,” the first half dozen athletes that brought the design onto the hardwood, “4190,” the original High’s product code, or its status as an “all-time-favorite” cement this specific pair as a celebration of the model as a whole.
