New Balance’s Allerdale may have served as a new branch in the catalog upon release, but maybe it was always just a natural evolution of their existing strengths. Having earnedd a reputation as the “kings of the dad shoe,” it served two purposes, filling out a more formalized “walking shoe” lane to build out alongside their runners, while also representing the pinnacle material executions that’d been associated with their Flimby Made in UK factory for years.
Since its introduction, the New Balance Allerdale has unflinchingly stuck to that storied aesthetic, only briefly stepping outside of neutral palettes with a Drake’s London collaboration early in its lifespan. While the “Chai Tea” New Balance Alleradale colorway featured here still makes good on that with grey collars and a gum sole, there’s no question that the turmeric-tinted suede utilized in the upper is arguably its most expressive yet. It’d likely go against the model’s mission statement to fully lean into vibrant tonality, but this demonstrates that even more unexpected color choices can work on the Boston brand’s tenured kicks.
The New Balance Allerdale “Chai Tea” is queued up for a September release, commanding a $250 retail price.
