By no means is this meant as a slight, but some of New Balance’s latest innovations are ones you could’ve plausibly predicted. Stepping into the retro sports universe with the New Balance 2000 was an unexpected but overall understandable prompt, as was bolstering fan love for the 99x series with the New Balance 2010, or even filling out their fashion-forward catalog with the New Balance Gator Run.
Contrarily, when the Boston brand delivered the New Balance Allerdale, we could’ve certifiably colored ourselves shocked. A shoe that many have described as a “grandpa shoe,” further turning the clock back on the “dad” aesthetics that partially propelled NB’s rise to the fore, its everyday comfort and peak materiality have made the model a smash within the NB community. It may have faltered somewhat early in our Sneaker of the Year bracket, but the silhouette is entering ’26 strong, issuing the continuingly clean combination of black and gum for its latest. Additionally, we begin to see some experiments in mixed media, as textured leather upholds the base of the upper before suede takes over across the quarter, mudguard, and heel counter.
