Truly, every Retro Jordan silhouette has flipped, twisted, and reinterpreted Bulls colors more times than we can count. It’s understandable that one of the most legendary careers in pro sports gets that level of attention from a billion-dollar business, but we couldn’t fault you for taking a “been there, done that” stance on Chicago colorways. Perhaps cognizant of that, Jordan Brand is focusing on a renewed push to spread the love to the other 29 teams in the NBA, as news of the Air Jordan 8 “Hornets” only further confirms.

The “Idols Become Rivals” series is the conceptual heart of that initiative, paying homage to some of the first torchbearers of the Jordan Brand legacy as MJ entered his final playing years. To that end, Kobe Bryant tacitly inspired the Jordan 4 “Lakers,” Quentin Richardson led to the Air Jordan 8 “Knicks,” and Shawn Marion is said to be the jumping-off point for the Air Jordan 5 “Suns.” Each of those athletes once looked up to His Airness in crafting their own games before they had to take the court against the man himself.

Within that context, the Air Jordan 12 “Bucks” revived a coveted Ray Allen player exclusive, though obviously ditched his personalized branding and switched its metallic bangles from gold to an iridescent purple/blue. To be clear, the “Idols Become Rivals” moniker hasn’t been attached to this pair yet, but there’s a clear link nonetheless. You bristle a bit at the fact that Chris Paul never took the court against Michael Jordan, but the passing savant would go carry the Jumpman brand into battle from his rookie year until the end of his career.

Though images of the actual Air Jordan 8 “Hornets” haven’t come to light, it’s overly likely that a similar tinkered arrangement is in the works, keeping the spirit of CP3’s exclusives at the heart of this public release. Color codes of “Black/New Emerald/Tour Yellow” are confirmed, aligning with Paul’s “Away” colorway.
