Nike Opens Pre-Orders for the Air Force 1 ’01 “NYC”, Shipping in October

Nike has formally introduced a massive change in how they release sought-after products this week. The Air Force 1 ’01 “NYC” is now available for pre-order, with pairs expected to ship in October 2026.

Pre-orders are not exactly a new phenomenon in the world of sneakers. Aimé Leon Dore and New Balance have gone through several release cycles so far with the made-to-order method, allowing fans to secure pairs early and to manage production efficiency, making a limited amount based on the number of early reservations. This week, Nike has opened up a pre-order release for the Air Force 1 ’01 “NYC” in celebration of the Knicks’ NBA Finals win over the weekend.

This drop is a huge shift in Nike’s method of managing high-profile releases. First, the Air Force 1 ’01 retro, which returns to the fan-favorite shape from 2001 was believed to be a limited-edition style. Pre-orders mean anyone can sign up for a pair now to receive them in October. Second, the scale of this pre-order drop is massive. They deployed the same method last year to meet demand for Tom Sachs’ Mars Yard 3.0 and GPS sneakers (still waiting on my pair), but this drop expands pre-orders past one seller, allowing Kith, Awake NY, Sneaker Room, and more to accept these early reservations, as well as through Nike’s own SNKRS app. Fulfillment for these drops could come from each retailer, though it remains to be seen how Nike will handle it with the number of pairs to make seemingly being left completely open-ended.

Nike’s first large-scale pre-order drop is underway, with reservations opening up earlier this morning and accepting entries until tomorrow, June 19th. This release will not arrive in-hand for the next few months, but will allow pretty much anyone to secure a pair of the Air Force 1 ’01 for a retail price. The Knicks-themed look is available from a range of NYC-based retailers, including Kith, Awake, Sneaker Room, and through the SNKRS app of course. Pricing is set at $140.
