The “Silver Bullet” Nike Air Max 97 is the definitive colorway of the retro running shoe. Nike remasters the model every few years for the 97’s anniversary, with 2027 bringing a new black tongue update to the colorway.
Air Max anniversary festivities from Nike have grown increasing more elaborate over the past decade. Last year delivered one of the most expansive celebrations yet, in honor of the Air Max 95 turning thirty years old. The model got a remastered Big Bubble version, tons of retro colorways, and a huge range of collaborations. Hell, special releases are still going, and will continue into next year with the Macaw pack. However, with the Air Max 97 also turning thirty next year, Nike has begun to tease some of their special releases through their showroom at Paris Fashion Week over the last few days.
Our first glimpse at a new Air Max 97 release for 2027 arrived earlier this week. The new leak delivered a first look at a laceless version of the ’90s running shoe, a first for the fan-favorite silhouette. Now, another pair has emerged, likely to be the most sought-after of the anniversary celebration: the Silver Bullet. Considered the definitive colorway of the runner, Nike is giving the classic look a new twist in 2027, swapping out the usual grey tongue and laces for jet black. The switch is subtle, but completely works, staying in line with what we’ve come to expect from an AM97.

Nike has made next to no announcements regarding their plans for the Air Max 97 anniversary next year, but we expect this new “Silver Bullet” update to arrive sometime in Spring, possibly in time for Air Max Day. The updated look brings a subtle twist to the iconic pair for this release, recoloring the mesh tongue in black. Pairs will likely be available through Nike and select retailers, and pricing for the new 2027 retros is currently unknown.
