Despite the reign of New Balance’s 991v2 in the last two years, the brand is still cooking new pairs of the original 991 model. This week, the retro runner has surfaced in a “Chocolate Plum” style, featuring an all-leather construction.
New Balance’s 991 silhouette first release in 2001, debuting as a cornerstone of the brand’s 99X series and the first major silhouette of the new millennium. Originally designed as a premium running shoe, the 991 introduced advanced cushioning with ABZORB technology and a refined upper that blended mesh, suede, and leather for comfort and durability. Over time, it transitioned into a lifestyle staple, celebrated for its quality construction and timeless style, and eventually spawned a v2 variant in the 2020s.
The 991v2 has been New Balance’s go-to model for their Made in UK program for the last few years, but recently the Boston brand has been revisiting the classic 991 style for some special releases. This week, the runner has surfaced in a new all-leather construction, a more premium take on the now-lifestyle sneaker. The look features a Caramel Cafe brown base etched with a grid pattern to give the appearance of a mesh textile. The shoe’s mid layers are added in a light tan shade, while the outer panels come in a rich Chocolate Plum brown pebbled leather to complete the look.

New Balance’s next pair of the original 991 silhouette has not been announced yet, but is coming soon in Spring 2026. This edition of the 2001 running shoe come in a premium all-leather construction, dressed in brown shades of Chocolate Plum and Caramel Cafe. Pairs will likely be available from both New Balance and select retailers, and pricing is estimated to start at $210.
