Last Spring, New Balance introduced a fresh addition to their Made in UK program, a dedicated walking shoe dubbed Allerdale. The pricey model has stuck around into this year, with a new “Vaporous Grey” pair landing soon, in time for Summer.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF MADE IN UK

New Balance was founded in 1906 in New England by William J. Riley, a British immigrant. Riley’s ties to the United Kingdom remained with the Boston-based brand for decades after his death in 1955. In 1982, New Balance started their Made in UK program, dedicating a section of their business to high-quality, craft-focused production made by the hands of residents in Cumbria, England. That same year, the brand introduced the now-iconic 1990, the first sneaker ver to retail over $100. Combined with the opening of their English production facility, NB was signaling their serious intentions to lean into premium running shoes.

In 1991, New Balance relocated their UK facility to Flimby, a small coastal village just a few miles up the road from the original location. The production facility has remained in the small town ever since, where a team of about 200 workers churn out an incredible 28,000 pairs of sneakers each week, every single one constructed by human hands.

THE DEBUT OF THE ALLERDALE

In the past, NB made two versions of their shoes, one from England and another from larger manufacturing batches, typically using toned down materials and made in much larger stock numbers, giving collectors something special to seek out. However, in more recent years, New Balance has turned to the Flimby, England facility to produce signature models exclusive to the Made in UK family. This started in 2023 with the 1550, a revised take on the classic 1500 with a more refined approach to the shoe’s production. A few years later in 2025, they introduced the Allerdale, a simple, no-nonsense silhouette purpose-built for walking. Each colorway is constructed from premium leathers, down to the shoe’s interior linings. Only a small selection of simple, tonal designs have hit shelves, as well as collaborations from NB’s English partners, END. Clothing & Drake’s.

The next release of the New Balance Allerdale has appeared on release calendars this week, with a drop planned for mid-June. The new color scheme comes in a “Vaporous Grey” tone, which appears as a sheer white in the official photos. The shoe’s leather lining comes in a light Chipmunk brown shade, with olive green footbeds hidden inside for just a touch of color.
