If you still only know New Balance as the “dad shoe” brand, kingpins of the inoffensive and easily styled, boy, do we have news for you. This decade, the Boston brand has been brashly emboldened, now boasting viral loafer hybrids, deconstructed industrial runners, and razor-sharp visible tech in its catalog.
The New Balance 1890A immediately joins that lineage, a sneaker we’ve had an eye on since Paris Fashion Week bore out first looks all the way back in June of 2025. On a strategic level, hearing of the shoe through that channel was unexpected in its own right; we’d eventually recognize that it was an offshoot of the New Balance 1890 proper, but it predated the “standard” build in the public consciousness.
“Leak” lore aside, it appears that the New Balance 1890A era is almost upon us, at long last. Retailer images confirm what we initially spotted: another hybrid in the style of the 1906L, but this time mashing up the ABZORB runner sole from the 2002 with the upper of a wallabee (or Wallabee) moccasin. If that wasn’t eye-catching enough, pale yellow leather combines with snakeskin overlays for a profile that only the most daring dressers can credibly pull off.
As mentioned above, the New Balance 1890A is scheduled for a July 1st release at overseas retailers. Whether that holds for stateside channels and what a USD retail price will be remains unconfirmed.
